Birmingham City University is located in the middle of England. Its location is really excellent. It’s only about 1 hour and 40 minutes from London. Students can travel from Birmingham to other major cities of Europe, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Frankfurt cities .Traditionally, Birmingham University is built on practice. There is a lot of industry in Birmingham.
In fact, Birmingham As we know, is the birth place of industry revolution. Nowadays, that translates into a number of creative industries that are set up in Birmingham. So the university has a very strong reputation, has a practice- based university. So its research is applied research. We work a lot with different companies. My role is in the faculty of arts design and media. Our faculty is one of the only very few in Europe we search a diverse range of disciplines from music connecting right to visual communication, fashion design.
So we cover all of the art design subjects and acting music and English. So it’s incredibly diverse which provides really great opportunities for students to experience some aspect of different disciplines in work together in teams. The school of art is very famous; the school of jewelry is very well-known. Music, acting, these role really schools with excellent reputations. In the same ways, the university, is very focused on practice, so our faculty is as well.
I really enjoyed meeting the students this morning and viewed their portfolios. Many, I was meeting the students with interests in jewelry, fashion design. It was also good that there were students interested in product design as well.
My overall impression is that the foundation course here is doing a really great job and helping the students to develop their work, ready to apply for the art design program, art design and media programs, I should say in the UK and Birmingham. What impress me most of all, I think was that the students begin to develop their own ideas.
To begin with, I thought their portfolios had too much secondary kind of research, in another words, is the students concentrating on collecting information. But I was really pleased to see that later on in their portfolios, the students are beginning to develop their ideas.
Much more, using their individual viewpoints to do that so that was really good to see if the drawings skills are really good, and I think the students should concentrate to great extending, bring out the best of that skills and have really good ideas, the best students are showing a good approach to experimentation and drawing influences from a range of areas.
So, overall, I was very impressed. The students are very strong. To say which is the better student, it’s actually, really difficult. There were two students that really stood out, the reason they stood out is that they were taking a concept that just a little bit further.
They had the practical skills but they brought kind of more conceptual approach to their studies. That’s something definite we Birmingham mature students are seeing. We want to see students with really good basic practical skills，We want to see thinkers think individual as well.
I think the best way to prepare for study in Birmingham City University within our faculty is to work hard in the foundation course. We are very interested in students who are showing a lot of enthusiasm for the subject and for the discipline that they want to study.
We want to see students develop their own ideas. When students work in their portfolio, we are interested to see how the students thinking. What kind of images they are looking out. What kind of influences they are drawing on. We don’t necessarily want to see finished pieces of work.
For example, if a student studies with the end of getting on a jewelry program. We don’t necessarily want to see the finished jewelry pieces. It’s the idea that much more important. And students showing that they have the real enthusiasm for the disciplines and that they are applying for and they are alive to what they might find in the future.
In another words, they have open mind. They are curious and they want to learn and they want to develop themselves within the disciplines and into the study.
